Why it matters
Water left in the lines does not survive a freeze
Water left in sprinkler lines does not stay put for the winter. Vineyard winters freeze water-filled pipes: when it freezes it expands, and that pressure can crack the parts that hold it. On a seasonal home that sits empty, the damage stays hidden under the lawn until the system is turned on again in spring. Winterizing before the first hard freeze empties the lines, so there is nothing left to freeze.
Valves
Valve bodies and backflow devices hold water too, and they can crack when it freezes.
Sprinkler heads
Risers and heads fill with water as well, and they can break when it expands.

We shut off the water to the irrigation system and drain the backflow preventer, so it is not left holding water.

We connect a compressor and run each zone in turn until the lines are empty and only air and mist come out of the heads.

We set your controller for winter, so it is not left running a schedule on an empty system.

04Leaks and broken heads noted for spring
While every zone runs we watch for leaks and broken heads and note them, so spring start-up begins with a clear list.
