Managing lawns in sandy coastal soils
Most properties on Martha's Vineyard sit on sandy soils that naturally drain water and leach nutrients very quickly. Standard synthetic fertilizers wash through this soil layer almost immediately, providing little benefit to grass roots while threatening the Island's sensitive marine ponds and groundwater.
We address this with a soil-first approach. Our lawn programs utilize slow-release, organic-based fertilizers and natural compost top dressings that build soil structure, hold moisture, and feed the grass roots steadily. We also recommend mowing at a higher height (3 to 3.5 inches) during the summer to shade the soil, reduce evaporation, and encourage deep, drought-tolerant root growth.
